Professor Arthur Morris, renowned plastic and reconstructive surgeon, has passed away at the age of 81. A revolutionary in his field, Arthur will be remembered for his inspirational leadership and enthusiasm, and his outstanding contribution to the development of reconstructive surgery across the world.
Arthur grew up in London and attended Dulwich College school on a scholarship. He later studied at Selwyn College, Cambridge, before moving to Guy’s Hospital London (now part of King’s College London) to pursue his medical degree.
After graduating in 1965, Professor Morris took on registrar jobs in Glasgow and Edinburgh. He was then appointed as a consultant plastic surgeon in Tayside. Here, he earned a reputation as an excellent and meticulous surgeon.
Throughout his career, Arthur introduced new ideas and surgical techniques, particularly in the areas of head and neck cancer, cleft lip and palate, hand surgery and trauma. He was later awarded an OBE for his services to plastic surgery in Scotland.
Arthur spent his retirement years pursuing his life-long passions for teaching, fishing and golf and chaired the prominent interclub liaison committee for clubs in St Andrews. He also continued to teach surgical students.
Howard Stevenson, former colleague and friend, described Professor Morris as, ‘an excellent colleague and a good friend. His two children, Tom and Ruth, spoke of the wonderful family life that Arthur and his wife, Vicki, had provided, and his legacy of a vibrant and thriving plastic surgery unit in Dundee is testimony to his many attributes.’
