Professor of Echocardiography and Consultant Clinical Scientist at King’s College London
Professor Mark Monaghan MBE, Echocardiography, and Consultant Clinical Scientist at King’s, passed away on 28 August 2023.
Professor Monaghan led clinical and echocardiography at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust for over three decades, before retiring in 2021. A full-time NHS employee, Monaghan will be remembered for his passion and dedication to education, research and innovation. In May 2023, he was awarded an MBE for his services to cardiology. Highlights of Mark’s extraordinary career include his contribution to new imaging technology – from 3D imaging of the heart, to developing minimally invasive heart valve implantation.
Mark authored more than 400 peer-reviewed papers, wrote three books and contributed to multiple book chapters. He was an outstanding teacher and mentored countless students, clinicians, echocardiographers and scientists, many of whom have gone on to distinguished careers themselves. His regular weekly seminars attracted a multidisciplinary clinical audience, and his lectures at national and international meetings were always exciting, informative and popular. In 2010, Mark was awarded a Professorship of King’s College London, in recognition of his academic achievements.
Professor Ajay Shah, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine at King’s, who worked closely with Professor Monaghan for many years and collaborated with him on several areas of research, said: ‘Mark’s accomplishments in the world of echocardiography are truly remarkable, and he leaves behind an incredible legacy, not just in what he achieved but also through all of those he has taught and inspired at King’s. It was an honour to know and work with him, and I offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends.’
Dr Claire Colebourn, President of the British Society of Echocardiography, described Professor Monaghan as ‘a kind and patient man who had time for everyone’, before commenting: ‘He was a huge support to me in my role as President and I will miss his presence tremendously. His loss leaves a huge gap in so many lives but especially his family, friends, colleagues and patients. Rest in peace, Mark, and thank you for everything.’
